How Much Is My Poster Worth?

How Much Is My Poster Worth?

Posted by Rory Emery on

It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked, and the honest answer is: it depends on more than most people expect. Here’s how a genuine valuation actually gets built, and how to get one for your own piece.

The factors that set the price

Five things do most of the work in any valuation: condition, rarity, the film or subject’s cultural weight, whether it’s a first printing or a reissue, and the artist behind the image where one is credited. Our guide to what makes a vintage poster valuable covers each of these in detail, but as a rule, a small change in any one of them, a fold separation here, a re-release instead of a first printing there, can move the price far more than people expect.

Why a photo isn’t enough on its own

A reasonable estimate needs to see the poster properly: full-size photographs of the front, the reverse, and close-ups of the fold intersections and corners where wear concentrates, plus its exact measurements. Anyone offering a confident number from a vague description alone is guessing, not valuing.

Comparable sales matter more than asking prices

The most reliable evidence of what something is actually worth is what genuinely comparable examples have sold for, not what similar pieces are currently listed for. Listed prices are aspirational; completed sales, particularly through major auction houses, are real. A specialist dealer will usually have access to this sales history for a given title, which is part of what you’re paying for in a professional valuation.

Original versus reproduction changes everything

Before value can even be discussed, authenticity has to be established. A beautifully preserved reproduction is worth a fraction of a worn but genuine original. If there’s any doubt about whether a poster is original, that question needs answering first; see our authentication guide.

Linen backing and restoration affect the number

A professionally linen-backed poster in good condition typically values higher than the same poster left folded and untreated, while heavy-handed restoration can suppress value for collectors who prize an unaltered surface. Be ready to disclose any work that’s been done, since it materially changes the assessment.

Getting a proper valuation

For anything beyond a rough personal estimate, whether you’re insuring a collection, considering a sale, or settling an estate, a specialist valuation from a dealer or auction house with real transaction history in the category is worth having. This isn’t the same as an online instant-quote tool, which can’t account for the condition and authenticity details that actually decide the price.

If you’re thinking of selling

A valuation and a sale process aren’t always the same conversation. If you’re considering selling a poster or a wider collection, our Sell Your Posters service exists specifically to walk through both, what a fair current market price looks like and the options for a straightforward, discreet sale.
